Spectrum Studio Art is work created by Non Binary Trans Artist Ray McEachern

When asked what they wanted to be when they grew up, Ray would always confidently answer 'Artist'. Now as an adult, they work with a variety of artistic mediums including photography, video, painting, baking, and makeup. Settled on the Unceeded Territories of The Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh peoples commonly known as Vancouver, Ray is a queer artist, heavily involved in and inspired by the local Queer and Drag community and consistently photographs the LGBTQIA2+ local nightlife events.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Ray fell back in love with painting and its amazing mental health benefits. In typical Virgo fashion, Ray is extremely detailed and meticulous with their art, spending months or even years until a piece feels 'right'. They've found an artistic practice that is therapeutic for them. 'Poured' or 'fluid painting' is a process of letting go of control. The completion of a piece from start to finish in one sitting. With poured paintings the artist's creative control only includes selecting the colours, order and the way the paint is poured on the canvas. They are forced to let go and allow the paint to do its own thing. It feels good to be able to make a small piece of art without dwelling too much over the intricate details.

With poured paintings there is always 'spill over' and left over paint. Ray hated seeing this waste and wanted to apply it to whatever they could. They started by dipping their phone's pop socket into the 'waste' and the result was
beautiful! They had a few wooden heart pieces in their art drawer, and started dipping those, while thinking about what they could be turned into?.....Magnets! A small art piece to put on fridges, wonderful and perfect timing too.

At the beginning of the Covid pandemic, Ray had to take extra caution as they're someone who deals with an invisible disability and chronic health issues. This new project creating magnet art enforced multiple steps to focus on and was the perfect task to enjoy passing the time while staying home in their studio. After a few tests and finding the right magnet supplier you can now enjoy these small art pieces on your magnetic surfaces. Each magnet is handmade with care and love, no mass production or machinery here! Know your purchase goes right to supporting a queer artist.
